September crime rate down 18%: Police

Highest number of crimes in September reported in Model Town division.

Model Town suffered the highest number of crimes in any police division in the city last month, though the overall crime rate in Lahore fell 18 per cent compared to September 2011, The Express Tribune has learnt.


A total of 245 heinous crime incidents were reported in Model Town division, up from 230 in September 2011, according to data compiled by the police. The number of motorbike and car thefts doubled from the same period last year.

Civil Lines division reported the second highest number of crimes, up 3.4% from last year. Though vehicle theft fell in the division, there was a 31% surge in robberies. Iqbal Town division came third, though the crime rate was 14% lower this September than last. The crime rate fell 22.4% in Cantonment division, 26.7% in City division, and 39% in Saddar division.

In terms of police stations, the highest number of serious crimes were reported at Muslim Town police station in Iqbal Town division. The crime rate in the police station’s jurisdiction rose an incredible 340% from the same month last year. Garden Town police station was second with a 48% increase in crime, followed by Gowalmandi, Naseerabad, Ghaziabad, Batapur, Race Couse, Defence A and Garhi Shahu police stations.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Discipline and Inspection) Shariq Kamal said that the police had brought down the crime rate by increasing patrolling and identifying the crime pockets. He said that they had also launched a special crackdown on drug peddlers. He said that the increase in crimes in Model Town and Civil Lines had been noted, but the rate had not risen significantly.
